Kristin and her Kids

Hello, and welcome to Kristin's world...

I hope you take time to browse through these many entries and will share my love and enthusiasm for travel, family, service through Rotary and the Peace Corps, and my evolving life in retirement. I'd love to hear from you, so please write back!

Since returning home from abroad I agreed to continue writing, and find it is a good way to keep in touch with friends and family. I kept this online journal for two and a half years while sharing my experiences in Romania with the U.S. Peace Corps. I was already a 60-year-old grandmother when I joined, and then two new grandchildren were born just before and soon after I went to Eastern Europe in 2007. These pages include many hundreds of pictures and personal observations about my life as a volunteer, the places where I traveled and the people I met along the way. The entries that I write these days are more personal and undoubtedly include some outspoken opinions, as I now have more freedom to speak my mind.

My Peace Corps Experience --
My home state of Alaska is known as the Last Frontier. It seems appropriate that I was sent to one of Europe's "Last Frontiers"... Romania. During my life in that country, I got a very intense personal education about their current rural and urban life and what it was like living under the harsh brand of communism under which they suffered prior to 1989. I also learned a lot about myself. I made wonderful friends and had amazing experiences that I enjoy sharing. We can't let ourselves be complacent about our own advantages, so I'm glad I could be of service to others.

My Retirement Years --
I have settled again in my home in Alaska, but will continue traveling as often as possible. I enjoy my dog and have ongoing responsibilities, but the lust for adventure, to see new places, learn about foreign cultures, meet new people and renew old friendships will always keep me on the go. I have eight grandchildren in Oregon, Nevada, and Germany, so just being Grandma means I will keep traveling.

My Interesting Past --
I've been asked to write more about my family's homesteading years in Alaska in the 50s, raising my kids in the woods outside Fairbanks without running water or electricity in the 60s and 70s, some of my many careers and the characters I have known, so I'll gradually be adding some old stories, too.
